CSR to conduct national population-based HIV Impact Assessment

The Government of Malawi (GoM) through the Ministry of Health (MoH) and ICAP at Columbia University and the Centre for Social Research of the University of Malawi will be implementing a national Population HIV Impact Assessment (PHIA) with funding support from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The PHIA is aimed at characterising HIV prevalence, incidence, viral load, and CD4+ T cell distribution, and HIV risk behaviors among adults aged 15-64 in Malawi. The PHIA will also assess access to and uptake of key HIV-related public health interventions such as access to and uptake of anti-retroviral treatment (ART) services.

A total of 15,000 households will be sampled from across the five health sector zones and the major urban areas of Lilongwe and Blantyre and from these households, it is expected that approximately 20,000 adults aged 15-64 years will be interviewed and blood samples will also be collected from these adults and from approximately 10,000 children aged 0-14 years from half of the households
